Buying guide: Flooring & Tiles
Batch and shade variation
Tiles, laminate, vinyl, engineered wood and solid wood all vary between production runs. Ceramic and porcelain tiles carry a batch or shade code, and tiles from different batches may not match in colour or size. Order the full quantity for a job from the same batch, and add an allowance for cuts, breakage and future repairs. Ask the supplier whether the same batch can be reserved, since reordering later may give a different shade. Keep leftover boxes for repairs.
Tile specifications
Tiles have technical properties that decide where they can be used. Water absorption separates porcelain from other ceramics, which matters for bathrooms, exteriors and frost conditions. Slip resistance ratings matter for wet areas, entrances and commercial floors, and the test method differs between markets. Abrasion ratings indicate how heavy a traffic load a glazed tile can take. Rectified tiles are cut to precise edges for narrow grout lines, while calibrated sizes vary slightly. Ask for the technical data sheet and check the rating against the use.
Laminate, vinyl and wood
- Laminate is graded by wear class, and light residential grades are not suitable for shops or offices. Check the thickness, the locking system and the moisture rating.
- Vinyl and luxury vinyl planks vary in wear layer thickness, and the wear layer is what determines how well it takes traffic.
- Engineered and solid wood depend on species, grade, finish and moisture content, and should be acclimatised before fitting.
Some markets regulate formaldehyde emissions from wood-based panels such as laminate and engineered boards, so check the rules for your market and ask for emission test documentation.
Weight, packaging and shipping
Tiles are very heavy and breakable. Freight is a major part of landed cost, and pallet weight limits matter, so compare delivered prices. Check how tiles are packed, how many square metres per carton, and what breakage terms apply. Mixed pallets of many designs can raise the cost per square metre. Floor coverings need dry, flat storage, and planks should not be stored standing or in damp conditions.
Margins and seasonality
Margins are modest on commodity tiles and better on design-led or imported ranges, though slow-moving designs tie up space and cash. Demand follows renovation and construction cycles and tends to be stronger in drier months in many regions. Discontinued ranges are sold cheaply, but replacement is impossible, so use them only when you can buy the whole job quantity.
Questions to ask a supplier
- Which batch or shade code is this stock, and can I reserve the quantity?
- What are the wear, slip and water absorption ratings?
- How many square metres per carton and per pallet?
- What are the breakage and returns terms?
- Do you have emission or compliance documents for wood-based flooring?
- Is the range continuing, and for how long?
Frequently asked questions
How much extra should I order?
Allow for cuts, breakage and a few spare tiles or planks for future repairs, with a larger allowance for diagonal layouts or complex rooms. Ask your supplier or installer for guidance. Keep spare boxes from the same batch.
Why do tiles from different batches look different?
Firing conditions and raw materials vary from run to run, which can change colour and size. This is why shade codes exist. Order all you need from one batch.
Can I use residential laminate in a shop?
Usually not, because light-duty grades wear quickly under commercial traffic. Check the wear class and the manufacturer's stated use. Choose a grade rated for the traffic.
What is rectified tile?
Rectified tiles are cut after firing so the edges are precise, allowing narrow grout joints. They can be less forgiving to lay. Ask the supplier for the size tolerances.
How many Flooring & Tiles suppliers are listed?
WholesalersCatalog currently lists 3 suppliers for this search. Each profile shows a Trust Score, so you can see what has been checked before you get in touch.
Which countries are these suppliers based in?
The largest groups are in United Kingdom (2) and Australia (1).
How do I check that a wholesale supplier is legitimate?
Check the company registration and street address, ask for trade references and start with a sample or small order. Be careful with suppliers who only accept untraceable payment methods. The Trust Score on each profile shows which of these signals we could confirm.
